Measuring ledge length and selecting bird spike pack coverage

Measurement starts at the outer corners of the surface. Window sills, ledges, gutters, roofs, and balconies require measurement along the total run rather than just the section where birds roost or nest today. Leaving an exposed edge gives room where birds land, so the tape must span the entire straight run from wall to corner.

Package coverage is marked by total linear distance, with options ranging from 2.6 ft, 3.4 ft, 5 ft, and 8.4 ft up to 60 ft, 73.7 ft, and 134.6 ft. These runs consist of joined sections rather than one single rigid piece. In our 304 stainless steel and PP plastic lines, each base piece has a length of 12.5 in (31.8 cm), a width of 1.37 in (3.5 cm), and a height of 1.5 in (3.8 cm).

Width of the surface determines how the strip fits along the structure. The wires spread to a width of 3 in (76 mm) with a spike length of 4 in (100 mm), which is sized for standard 4 in (100 mm) wide window sills, ledges, and doorways. Because the base width is 1.37 in (3.5 cm), the strip fits securely on narrow flat ledges while the wires spread out overhead.

Surfaces rarely match pack coverage exact to the inch, which is why the base is flexible, bendable, and easy to cut. When a ledge measures between listed lengths, the base can be shortened to end flush with the corner. Cutting the strip to fit the entire edge eliminates open sections, because an uncovered gap left at the end of a run is where birds land.

Fastening the pieces into place secures the measured run across the outdoor area. The flexible base can be fastened with screws along window sills, roofs, gutters, balconies, railings, doorways, and patio edges. Matching the measured feet of the ledge to the package length ensures continuous placement along the full surface where birds roost or nest.
