Finding the right shower flange, adapter, and bracket size

Straight plumbing runs often need an elbow or a converter when components do not align directly. A brass converter adapter with G 1/2 female by G 1/2 female threading connects two male ends, with an inner diameter of 0.75 in to maintain flow. Where a handheld shower needs an altered angle from an existing pipe, an elbow adapter or universal swivel ball joint provides standard G1/2 male and female connections on either side to reorient the sprayer.

Gaskets and washers seat inside the female collar to create the water seal under compression. Smoother thread machining allows the faces to meet evenly, and 95% of shower heads can achieve good water sealing effect without thread seal tape. Forcing excessive tape onto straight parallel threads can push a washer out of alignment or prevent the nut from threading down to the bottom face, leading to water escaping past the joint.

Covering the rough opening in bathroom wall tile is the sole mechanical function of a flange. A standard replacement flange measures 2.5 in in outer diameter with an inner hole diameter of 13/16 in to fit 1/2 in. Ips shower arms. When wall cutouts around the pipe are larger, an extra large flange with a 3.5 in outer diameter conceals the surrounding gap. The flange sits flat against the tile surface and does not secure the pipe in place.

Slide bar holders secure a handheld head along a vertical pole by gripping the outer circumference. Ball joints and arm mounts add angular freedom where a fixed pipe meets a sprayer. A shower head holder with a solid metal ball allows 363 degrees of rotation once the hand shower is attached, so the head turns by hand to any angle. Constructed from 304 stainless steel or brass, these components provide resistance to acid, alkali and salt, fitting standard G1/2 connections to position a shower head or handheld wand inside a shower or bathtub.
